The Journey of a Lifetime

Marcus Cassel

A narrative of resilience, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to faith, family, and community.

A Foundation of Love and Faith

MARCUS RAY CASSEL entered this world surrounded by love on January 6, 1983, the first son born to Clyde and Joletta Cassel. Marcus was a happy and outgoing baby. His intelligence was noticeable early on, speaking his first word, "Dada", at five months and walking at eight months. Marcus was a truly precocious child and when he was one and a half years old, his little brother, Jason Hayes Cassel was born. Marcus was a caring and protective big brother to Jason.

"He lived a spiritual and spirit-filled life... Marcus lived his entire life with the Love of God in his heart that he learned as a child."

He attended Long Beach Brethren Elementary School, Calvary Chapel Christian School of Downey and Narbonne High School, where he played football. As a young man, Marcus became a member of Central Baptist Church in Carson, where he continued to grow in God's love. Marcus excelled in life--as a great student and stellar athlete. He was a great son, grandson, brother, cousin, nephew, teammate and friend. He was loved by many. Those who knew him knew that he was passionate about everything in life.

Marcus's smile left a lasting impression

A Leader on the Field

Marcus was a member of the Orange County Junior All American Football Carson Colts; they were the 1997 Super Bowl champions! Early on, his coaches noticed his talent and Marcus parlayed his football career into a successful tenure at St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, Calif. While attending St. John Bosco, Marcus was a star cornerback, and earned All State and All American honors. Although he was highly recruited by schools across the country, Marcus felt it was best to stay close to home, where he attended the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

While at UCLA, Marcus worked hard to become a leader and an impact player for the team. During his junior and senior years, he was a starting player. He played exceptionally well during the last game of his collegiate football career. UCLA played the University of Southern California. The rivalry was intense, but Marcus, always listed as an underdog, rose to the occasion, played his best, and was named Defensive Player of the Game!

Inside, Marcus lived with a steely determination to conquer all obstacles set before him. In 2006, Marcus graduated from college with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. This was a proud and joyous day. On the way home from graduation, Marcus leaned out the car window and yelled "I Did It ! It's a Celebration!" to the people on their way to other graduations. People stopped, clapped and cheered - happy to celebrate with him. He had an amazing way of making people feel like they were friends, he never met a stranger.

When Marcus was not on the field he loved to play video games, dance, listen to music and hang out with friends. His smile permeated everything that Marcus did. It was the perfect representation of who he was. Although he was quiet and very much a thinker-- when he talked, people listened, and when he smiled he left a lasting impression on others.

Marcus's ultimate dream was to play in the NFL. He signed with the Carolina Panthers, but injured his hamstring during training camp and was released from the team. This did not deter Marcus one bit, and he returned home, deciding to enter graduate school. However, our Heavenly Father had another plan. On November 17th, 2006, Marcus went to Glory to be with the Lord.

He leaves to cherish his precious memory his parents, Clyde and Joletta Cassel, His brother, Jason Hayes Cassel, his grandmother, Myrtle Terrell of Houston, Texas, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives, and friends. Preceding him to Glory were his beloved grandmother Lizzie Evans Jackson, grandfathers, Asberry Cassel and L.T. Wiggins, and uncle, Lucius Ray Terrell, Aunty Connie Sanders.

"MARCUS LIVES" REMEMBRANCE CELEBRATION

November 17, 2007 marked the one year passing of our beloved son Marcus Ray Cassel. It hardly seemed that a whole year had passed since we had seen or talked to him in the flesh, but his spirit was ever present in our lives during the year.

Over 300 family and friends came to our home to share in a Remembrance Celebration. We all wore red shirts and had red balloons that said "Marcus Lives through Me".

Marcus had a favorite bible scripture that he wore on a necklace (dog tags) that stated "Work hard and become a leader...be lazy and become a slave. Proverbs: 12:24. This scripture was printed on back of the shirts.

The day of remembrance was not a day to idolize Marcus but it was a day to meet and greet each other and share memories of Marcus. It was a day to reflect and recognize that -Marcus-did-exist; and that he was a part of our lives. It was a day that we expressed how much we all -missed -him.

If for no other reason except: for being selfish we expressed we wished we could have spent more time on this earth with Marcus. For those of us who are believers in Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior...we realized that instead of being selfish we would celebrate-JOY knowing that Marcus had completed his task on earth and his work was done. He was now in the glory of the Kingdom of our Lord.

As stated in the Bible: Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 "To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under the Heaven. A time to be born and a time to die..." Marcus was here for a season and we just praise God that we were able to be there in his life and he was present in our lives during his season.

In the Bible, the prophet Isaiah wrote in: Chapter 40:28-31 "Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth...; but for those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Jesus said to us: "Come unto me all ye that are weary and are heaven laden and I will give you rest"

After we fellowshipped with music, food and good cheer the guest left the gathering with the thoughts of this Remembrance Day to renew our strength, bring closure to the past year of mourning and for us to soar on wings like eagles, walk and not be faint run and not grow weary and continue to LIVE...

As for Jason, Clyde and myself, we ask for all of you to Keep Marcus alive in your memory and to keep us in your prayers.

God's Part

The gift of having you here
Memories now we share
About you all of us cared

I know faith got you in the gates
Only God knows the date
The next time we meet face to face

You are so unique
Sleep in peace
Till the next time we meet

Lots of Frustration
You were and are my motivation
Determination,
God works in mysterious ways by situations
But still so gracious
Gathered here in your remembrance all races

Early but surely
Through you we see God's Glory
That is why I'm not even worried

From the start by God's part
Blessed with a good heart
Good looking, intelligent and smart
Had all the pretty girls in the dark

You passed away taught me wrong from right
Now you chilling in paradise
up in Heaven now you fly
flew
knowing your soul rise
dedicated to Marcus Ray Cassel
We all loved you
And someday we'll all see you
No worries no cries must be beautiful
Marcus speak he telling the truth
At the tree of life eating fruit

Lots of stress about the death
If I had one wish
Stop he gone;
a positive mark he left on a righteous quest, yes
Indeed do your best; in God believe.
